It has been such an exciting month in our classroom, and one of the moments that truly lit up our space was celebrating Diwali together. Students learned what this holiday means to so many families: lighting lamps, spending time with loved ones, and focusing on kindness and new beginnings. They also created bright, colorful rangoli designs after learning that rangolis are traditionally placed at the entrance of homes to welcome positivity, joy, and good luck. The whole room felt so joyful while they worked!

This celebration felt especially meaningful because both I and one of our students celebrate Diwali at home. Sharing our own traditions and stories helped the class see how a single holiday can look different in every family while still reflecting the same values (Habit 5!). This tied directly into our 4th-grade Social Studies learning, as we explore how the cultural traditions and contributions of people throughout California help shape our communities (CA HSS 4.4). It gave the students a chance to learn from one another and appreciate the diversity within our classroom.

We also talked about the message of Diwali, light overcoming darkness, and connected it to the ways we bring light into our classroom through our words, our choices, and how we treat one another.

Another highlight was a special flashlight reading activity. Students read together in the glow of their flashlights, creating a cozy and magical environment! This activity not only celebrated literacy but also reflected Elevate’s core value of community, as students shared the joy of reading and supported one another in a fun and meaningful way.

We were excited to share this celebration during our October Leader of the Month assembly, especially with California officially recognizing Diwali as a state holiday this year. It made the whole experience feel even more special for our class!
