In our previous unit, students used 21st-century skills to create a presidential campaign for one of the Founding Fathers. They researched a chosen Founding Father and created a résumé highlighting that individual’s accomplishments and contributions. Students also analyzed primary sources to infer the philosophies these leaders held that helped them succeed.
They then evaluated the character of another Founding Father by examining primary sources to identify a flawed or immoral philosophy that individual may have held. Students used their evidence to support their arguments in a debate centered on our essential question: Are great accomplishments and contributions tainted by immoral or flawed philosophies?
In our current unit, students have been practicing how to evaluate arguments and analyzing the structure of research articles. They applied these skills while researching the connection between food insecurity and food waste in the United States. After evaluating a TED Talk presented by the founder of Goodr—a nonprofit that connects restaurants with local delivery drivers to redirect excess food to people in need—students used their research to write persuasive letters to local grocery stores or restaurants encouraging them to partner with Goodr.
It has been amazing to see students apply Habit 8: Use your voice and inspire others to find theirs!
